Doctor of Medical Sciences, associate professor, head of the Department of Pediatric Neurology
Leonid Shalkevich was born in Minsk. First, he started to work as a nursing assistant in the operation unit of Minsk Clinical Otorhinolaryngological Hospital. In 1996, he graduated from Minsk Medical Institute, Pediatrics Faculty. From 1997 to 1999, after the internship in neurology, he worked as a neurologist at the Psychoneurological Unit for Newborns of the 7th Minsk Clinical Hospital.
Since 1999, he has been working at the Department of Pediatric Neurology of BelMAPE, first – as an assistant; since 2007 - as an associate professor; since January 2011, he has been working as head of the Department of Pediatric Neurology.
In 2000, he defended Candidate’s thesis. In 2008, he got the academic title of associate professor. In 2020, Leonid Shalkevich defended Doctoral thesis. He is a neurologist of the highest qualification category.
Leonid Shalkevich did internship in eliptology and general neurology at Masaryk University, Medical Faculty (Czech Republic, 2004), internship in Paris Institute of Myology (France, 2008), interbship in the USA (2014).
Leonid Shalkevich is a chief pediatric neurologist of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Belarus, head of the Republican Center for Pediatric Neurology. He is an expert on early intervention of the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) in the Republic of Belarus. He is a member of the Republican Qualification Commission of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Belarus, Consultant of the Republican Center for Emergency Medicine of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Republic of Belarus, a member of the Republican Expert Commission on Medical Equipment.
Leonid Shalkevich is actively involved in scientific activities. He was a performer of three research projects and head of two research projects in the frameworks of the implementation of the State and Sectoral Scientific and technical programs of the Republic of Belarus.
He was repeatedly invited to give lecture and conduct master classes on child neurology abroad (Russia, Mongolia, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan).
His research interests include neurology of newborns and young children, clinical features and treatment of epilepsy in children and adolescents, innovative methods of treatment of children with cerebral palsy.
He was a member of committees dealing with the organization of a number of international congresses and republican conferences and seminars.
Leonid Shalkevich is a member of the Belarusian Society of Neurologists and Neurosurgeons, the European Society of Pediatric Neurologists, the International Association of Pediatric Neurology.
He is a member of the Editorial Boards of the journals “Neurology and Neurosurgery. Eastern Europe ”(Belarus),“ International Neurological Journal ”(Ukraine), English-language“ E-Cronicon Open Access Pediatrics (EC Pediatrics)” and “BAOJ Pediatrics”.
He is an author and co-author of more than 200 publications in Belarus, Russia, Ukraine and abroad, including 1 textbook, 3 monographs: "Pathogenetic and electro-clinical polymorphism of epilepsy: rare and atypical epileptic syndromes of childhood" (2015), "Single convulsive seizure in children "(2016)," Epileptic disorders of symptomatic genesis in the childhood" (2018), 5 clinical guidelines for doctors:" Pediatric anesthesiology, resuscitation and intensive care "(2011)," Guidelines for emergency conditions in children "(2012) , "Pediatric Neurology: clinical recommendations "(2015)," Federal guidelines on pediatric neurology "(2016)," Epilepsy in children. Rare and atypical forms "(2018), 30 teaching aids. Prepared 8 instructions for use, approved by the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Belarus, author of 16 patents for inventions, 15 rationalization proposals.
He was awarded with the Honorary Diploma of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Belarus (2018), the Honorary Diplomas of the Health Committee of the Minsk City Executive Committee (2009, 2011), the medals "Hippocrates" (Russia, 2012), "For Labor for Life" (Russia, 2014), the jubilee medal "70 years Victories in the Great Patriotic War 1941-1945. " (Republic of Belarus, 2016).
