Liana Shestakova

In 1992, Liana Shestakova graduated from Minsk State Medical Institute with a specialty in General Medicine with a distinction. Since 1993, after the internship in surgery, she had been working as a senior researcher at the 4th Minsk City Clinical Hospital, and then as a leading researcher at the Laboratory of heart Surgery at Belarusian Scientific and Research Institute for Cardiology. Since 2001 until the present, Liana Shestakova has been working as head of the Department of Extracorporal Circulation of the Republican Scientific and Practical Center for Cardiology.

In December 1999, she brilliantly defended her thesis "Comprehensive protection of the myocardium based on blood during operations under artificial circulation." In 2000, she was awarded the degree of Doctor of Medical Sciences on the specialty Cardiovascular Surgery. 

Over the years, she has performed high-quality artificial circulation and myocardial protection for more than 5500 patients during cardiac surgery, 220 intra-aortic balloon counterpulsations, more than 70 short-term and medium-term cardiac ventricular bypasses, 60 therapeutic plasmapheresis, renal replacement therapy for 350 patients with multiple organ failure, mechanical support of blood circulation using artificial ventricles of the heart for 40 patients, 160 ECMO; 15 selective immunosorptions for cardiomyopathies, more than 1000 hardware autohemotransfusions. Each of these techniques is classified as highly technological. She took an active part in the "Children's Heart" campaign. She prepared a lot of specialists who deal with  artificial blood circulation; she mastered and introduced into the practice the unique methods of treating critical heart failure, the methods of preserving the vital activity of the brain and spinal cord during operations on the thoracic aorta, the technology of apparatus autohemotransfusion, plasmapheresis in combination with surgical treatment of coronary heart disease, the methods of ultrahemodiafiltration, and etc .  

She repeatedly presented her reports at international forums, her works were highly appreciated by specialists, the author was awarded with international diplomas "For the best work". She is a laureate of the competition of scientific works of young scientists at the 3rd All-Russian Congress of Cardiovascular Surgeons, for fruitful long-term cooperation she was elected an honorary member of the Association of Cardiovascular Surgeons of Ukraine, she is a member of the Russian Society of Extracorporeal Technologies, a member of the International Society of Minimally Invasive Extracorporeal circulation technology ). 

She was awarded with certificates of honor: Ministry of Health of the Republic of Belarus in 2001, Republican Scientific and Practical Center "Cardiology".

In May 2008, she was awarded the highest qualification category on the specialty "Cardiac Surgery". 

In December 2016, she got the qualification title of associate professor.

In 2019, she was awarded the title "Excellence in Healthcare".

She got specializations in cardiovascular surgery, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, mechanical methods of circulatory support, cardiac surgery and angiology, organ transplantation according to good clinical practice. She did refresher courses on transplantation in 2015, the course "Legal support of occupational safety in the organization" in 2016.  

She takes an active part in clinical, pathological and anatomical conferences, consultations, in the work of scientific and practical seminars and congresses on the problems of diagnostics and surgical treatment of patients with cardiac surgery profile.

Since 2010, she has been involved in teaching work at the Department of Cardiac Surgery of BelMAPE; and since March 2014, she has been working as professor at the department.
