Nikolay Zavada was born in the town of Makeyevka of Donetsk region (Ukraine) in a family of employees.
Nikolay Zavada graduated from Minsk Medical Institute with a specialty in General Medicine in 1973. From 1973 to 1977, he worked as a surgeon at Mogilev City Clinical Hospital for Emergency Medical Care; afterwards he worked at the Unit of Surgical Hepathology of Occupational Health Facility of Mogilev Plant «Chimvolokno». From 1977 to 1981 – a surgeon, head of Surgery Unit of Minsk City Clinical Hospital № 9. In 1981, he continued his career as an assistant of the Department of Emergency Surgery of Belarusian State Institute for Advanced Medical Training. In 1985, Nikolay Zavada defended his Candidate’s thesis entitled «Surgical treatment of external biliary fistula», and in 1998, he defended his Doctoral thesis entitled «Surgical treatment of acute cholecystitis». In 2004, he got the academic title of a professor on the specialty «Clinical Medicine». Since 2000, Nikolay Zavada has been working as head of the Department of Emergency Surgery of Belarusian Medical Academy of Postgraduate Education.
Nikolay Zavada was the first one in the Republic of Belarus, who started to conduct laparoscopic operations on abdominal cavity organs (1993). Now he continues to develop new technologies and implements minimally invasive operations into emergency surgery. He is one of the leading physicians in the Republic of Belarus, who deal with the treatment of acute and chronic cholecystitis and complications of complicated gallstone disease. In his scientific work, he also deals with acute and chronic diseases of pancreas, abdominal injuries, polytrauma, complicated gastric and duodenal ulcer, acute adhesive bowel obstruction, peritonitis, sepsis and other diseases.
Nikolay Zavada has the highest qualification category in surgery. He conducts medical advisory work in hospitals of Minsk and other regions of Belarus. He is an official medical advisor of the Republican Clinical Medical Center of the President’s Office of the Republic of Belarus.
Nikolay Zavada is an author and coauthor of more than 250 scientific works, among them there are 9 monographs and educational guides. He has 5 patents for intentions. He was the first one in Belarus, who developed clinical protocols on diagnostics and treatment of acute surgical diseases in hospitals, approved by the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Belarus in 2005. He was an academic advisor of the academic research work on the development of the first introduced in Belarus an enteral feeding formula for surgical patients and a high-class electrosurgical generator. In 2007, he got a reward for excellence in healthcare of the Republic of Belarus. He was also awarded by a badge of honor given by the Society of Endoscopic Surgeons of Russia (Diploma №014), Certificate of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Belarus, Honorable Certificates given by the State Committee on Science and Technologies of the Republic of Belarus, Health Committee of Minsk City Executive Committee and BelMAPE. Nikolay Zavada participated in the work of the First Meeting of Scientists of the Republic of Belarus. In 2006, he was a winner of the President’s Scholarship in the field of healthcare. He headed the Republican Center for Emergency Surgery. Nikolay Zavada also worked as a chief surgeon of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Belarus.
Nikolay Zavada is a chairman of the Task Group Commission for Emergency Surgery of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Belarus. He is an expert is surgery of the Center for Examinations and Tests in Health Service of the Republic of Belarus, a member of the Board of Belarusian Association of Surgeons. He is a chairman of the Board of Society of Surgeons of Minsk and Minsk region. Nikolay Zavada is a chief editor of the international scientific and practical journal «Emergency Medicine».
