Sergei Shakhrai was born in January, 1973, in the village of Okolitsa, Minsk region. In 1996, he graduated from Minsk Red Banner of Labour State Medical Institute, Faculty of General Medicine. From August, 1996, to August, 1997, Sergei Shakhrai worked as a teacher apprentice of surgery at the 10th Minsk Clinical Hospital. From August, 1997, to August, 2001, Sergei Shakhrai worked as a surgeon at the 10th Minsk Clinical Hospital. In 2000, Sergei Shakhrai defended Candidate’s thesis. From August, 2001, to August, 2009, he worked as an assistant, and then - as an associate professor at the Department of General Surgery of Belarusian State Medical University. From the 28th of August, 2009, he worked as an associate professor, from the 1st of April, 2016, he started to work as professor at the Department of Emergency Surgery at State Educational Establishment «Belarusian Medical Academy of Postgraduate Education» until the present.
In 2015, he defended Doctoral thesis entitled «Minimally invasive and hospital-replacing technologies in anorectal surgery». In 2017, he got the academic title of associate professor.
He is a surgeon of the highest qualification category. He is in charge of the Urban Center for Ambulatory and Minimally Invasive Surgery at the 11th City Clinical Hospital. In 2008, Sergei Shakhrai developed methodological and organizational concept of work of surgical units in the conditions of short-term stay of patients in a hospital, he is the initiator of the development of hospital-saving technologies in the Republic of Belarus.
Practical medical advisory and scientific activities of Sergei Shakhrai include a wide range of problems of modern surgery, proctology, vascular surgery, laser surgery. He specializes in general surgery, proctology, ultrasound diagnostics. He is the author of 235 scientific works, including 2 monographs, 19 teaching aids and guidelines for doctors and students, 14 instructions for disease treatment, 27 works of authorship (patents for inventions), 35 certificates of rationalization proposals.
He takes an active part in the work of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Belarus, the Health Committee of the Minsk City Executive Committee. He is a member of the attestation commission of the Healthcare Committee, chief specialist of the Ministry of Health for outpatient surgery and hospital-replacing technologies. From 2007 to 2017, he was a scholar of the President of the Republic of Belarus as a talented young scientist. From 2018 until the present, he has been a chairman of the Council for the implementation of the project for the construction of the republican simulation center of the program "Modernization of the health care system in the Republic of Belarus" in the frameworks of the agreement between the Republic of Belarus and the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development.
