Professor, Doctor of Medical Sciences

Vladimir Ternov was born in Moscow. In 1960, he graduated from Minsk Medical Institute. He worked as a junior researcher (1960 -1961), and PhD student of the Scientific and Research Institute for Labour Hygiene and Occupational Diseases of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR (1961 -1964), head of the Department of Radiation Hygiene of BelSRI (1964 – 1979). Since 1979 until the present, he has been working at Belarusian Medical Academy of Postgraduate Education: as a senior lecturer (1979-1982), associate professor (1982-1987), professor (1987-1991), head of the Department of Hygiene and Medical Ecology (from 1991 to February, 2006). Since February, 2006, he had been working as professor at the Department of Hygiene and Medical Ecology. From 1984 to 1995, he worked as a vice-rector for research work of BelMAPE.

In 1964, Vladimir Ternov defended Candidate’s thesis. In 1986, he defended Doctoral thesis.

Thanks to the efforts of Vladimir Ternov, the system of planning, reporting of research and development and personnel training has been optimized; the material and technical base of the Central Scientific and Research Laboratory had been improved; the beginning of the introduction of computer technologies into scientific and educational processes had been laid.

Vladimir Ternov is one of the Belarusian experts in radiation hygiene, radiobiology and radiation toxicology.

He is an author of 200 research works, including 2 monographs, a chapter in the encyclopedia «Chernobyl» and the monograph «Life, health, longevity», 10 teaching aids.
He was a chairman of the National Commission of the Republic of Belarus on radiation protection under the Council of Ministers, from 2001 until the present – a member of the National Council on Radiation Protection. The recommendations of the commission are widely used to improve the measures of radiation and social protection of the population affected by the Chernobyl accident.

He is a member of the expert commission of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Belarus on radiation medicine; a member of the subcommittee on certification of specialists in sanitary and hygienic and anti-epidemic profile of the Republican Qualification Commission of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Belarus; a member of the editorial board of the journal «Public Health»; a member of the Council for the Defense of Doctoral theses at BelMAPE; an expert of the State Committee  on Science and Technologies; a chairman of the working group of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Belarus on scientific and organizational support for the construction and operation of the Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant.

He was encouraged by the Ministry of Health of Belarus, the USSR Union, the House of Representatives, the editorial board of the journal “Public Health”, the branch trade union, the Higher Attestation Commission. He was awarded for the excellence in healthcare, the medal "For Valorous Labour", the badge of the Central Committee of the Komsomol "For the development of virgin lands", the medal "Veteran of Labor”.
